As of October 1st, 2025, Aria Hotels will manage ATHENS 1890-Hotel & Spa, a  landmark in its portfolio of heritage accommodations.

Housed in a stunning 19th-century neoclassical mansion, ATHENS 1890 – Hotel & Spa is situated in one of the most vibrant and central locations in Athens: Agia Irini Square. The hotel features 14 elegant and spacious rooms and suites, meticulously decorated to highlight the building’s architectural heritage. Select rooms offer the added luxury of private jacuzzis, while the hospitality experience is perfectly complemented by a fully equipped, state-of-the-art spa created in collaboration with the Hammam Experience team, offering guests moments of deep relaxation and well-being.

The listed building, originally constructed by silk merchant Ioannis Michalopoulos, is a prime example of Athenian Belle Époque architecture. Carefully restored with deep respect for its historic identity, the six-level mansion originally served a dual purpose: retail space on the ground floor and private residence above. Today, the former shop has been transformed into the hotel’s reception and restaurant area, while the basement, once a storage space, now houses the luxurious spa. The upper floors that once hosted the family residence now accommodate the hotel’s refined guest rooms.

Key architectural features of ATHENS 1890 include the intricate facade, an impressive wooden staircase, original ceiling frescoes, the bust of the goddess Athena from Varvakeion, and the authentic metal sign of the historic textile store “K. Simeonidis.”

The restoration was guided by a commitment to preserving the architectural integrity and aesthetic spirit of the past. Interior spaces have been designed with an emphasis on simplicity, elegance, and the refined style of a bygone era. The result is a hospitality experience that bridges the city’s rich history with contemporary comfort, offering guests a truly timeless journey.
