Nestled discreetly between Perikleous and Ermou streets, Yphēs eclectic eatery stands as a testament to Athens’ evolving culinary scene. Though it is the sister property of the newly inaugurated Emerald Athens , Yphēs restaurant operates independently, inviting both hotel guests and city wanderers to indulge in its gastronomic offerings.
The location of Yphēs adds to its charm. Situated on a hidden pedestrian street, it’s a sanctuary amidst the city’s hustle. The corner building offers two distinct seating experiences: one with views of the bustling Perikleous street, ideal for people-watching, and another in a secluded garden, providing a tranquil escape. The interior, embracing a relaxed and stylish atmosphere, is thoughtfully designed, featuring a cozy food bar area making it suitable for solo diners or business lunches.
Mornings at Yphēs are a delightful affair. From early hours, the restaurant serves a sumptuous breakfast spread, welcoming not only those staying at Emerald, but also passers-by seeking a hearty start to their day. The ambiance during breakfast is lively yet intimate, making it a perfect spot to enjoy freshly brewed coffee and artisanal pastries.
As the day goes on, Yphēs transforms. From 4 PM onwards, the dinner service begins, showcasing a menu crafted by chef Nikos Zervos. Diverging from traditional dining structures, the menu is designed for sharing, eliminating the conventional starter-main course format. Diners can explore a diverse array of dishes, each reflecting a harmonious blend of Mediterranean flavours with subtle Asian nuances.
Each dish at Yphēs is a visual and culinary masterpiece, promising a memorable yet accessible dining experience. Nikos Zervos signed a daring menu with unexpected flavour combinations which challenge and excite your palate. During my visit, the seabass ceviche and the Amberjack tiradito stood out, not only for their impeccable taste and balance, but also for their artistic presentation. The fried sole was an unexpected delight -fun and flavorful. I’m eager to return to explore the beef tartare, the flap steak and other selections. Complementing the food is a curated list of signature cocktails, perfect for starting the evening or pairing with the meal. I tried the Geisa Roses with gin, roses, yuzu, cucumber and black pepper. Moreover, Yphēs offers exceptional value for money, with reasonable prices enhancing the overall dining experience.
